- Caleb Coffey started playing guitar in Iowa City, IA. He first became attached to the folk guitar picking idea after hearing John Prine's first album. A few years later he was introduced to Greg Brown's music through Greg's daughter. "Happy By Myself" was the song that started much of Caleb's now progressive fingerpicking style. Caleb started a band when he was eighteen called El Nino and they played at the Que and The Green Room in Iowa City, sometimes opening for more famous local talent such as Dave Zollo. Caleb moved to New York at nineteen for a very brief time, and missed a great opportunity to open for Greg Brown at the Mill for a local benefit show. Throughout the hard times and good times Caleb continued playing around Iowa City and moved to Berkeley a couple years later playing at the Starry Plough on tuesday nights. He worked the gigs around the bay area for a few months and wrote some good songs there; including "Walking Alone." Caleb Coffey landed in Portland one year later, in July, 2003. He started playing at the downtown Bitter End and Produce Row. Within Portland, Caleb wrote almost all of the material on his current c.d. The songs on his latest self titled c.d. provoke images and beautifully melancholy feelings; almost like the blues in progressive folk style. He now works many clubs around Portland with an awesome trio. He has become a respectable talent in the music scene.
